A Way of Life is an inspiring exploration of creativity in art and in life.
Taking her cue from Shakespeare’s existential metaphor, “All the world’s a stage,” Author and Stanford Professor Emerita Patricia Ryan Madson urges us to live our lives based on improvisational theater principles like “Say Yes,” “Don’t Give Up,” and “Enjoy the Ride.” Madson’s maxims of improv are illuminated by the life and teachings of experimental theater director Scott Kelman (1937-2007), who created the performance technique known as ‘kelmanworks’.
Taught in the United States and in England, ‘kelmanworks’ is based on a deliberative mindfulness that applies to so much more than theater. It is about the real performance, the one we all do every day. Together, Madson and Kelman interweave a tapestry of improvisation and storytelling that inspire us to listen to our true selves and follow our impulses, so we can improv - and improve - our characters both on and off the stage.
